This editorial introduces the Alliance supported thematic series Medicines in health systems: advancing access, availability and appropriate use, published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Policy and Practice. The series brings together, in the form of peer-reviewed publications, case studies that served as the background for the Alliance’s Flagship Report “Medicines in Health systems: advancing access, availability and appropriate use” which was launched in 2014.

The editorial illustrates how the three case studies together serve as examples of the use of health market interventions to enhance medicines access in low- and middle-income countries. It summarizes the studies’ major findings and most importantly provides learning for policy-makers on how best to move forward in this area.
