Sustainable health systems through contextualizing health taxes in equitable ways: political economy of health taxes in low- and middle-income countries

The session will cover a broad spectrum of case studies highlighting learnings from an ongoing programme of research in eight countries illustrating successful and challenging case studies on health taxes in LMICs. Topics will range from the economic impact of specific health taxes, eg  tobacco, alcohol, sugar-sweetened beverages and fossil fuels taxes, to the political challenges in garnering support and navigating opposition. Researchers will discuss strategies for expanding and improving the implementation of health taxes balancing health improvements with revenue generation alongside considerations for equity.
